No Group Backed Atiku Like South-East, South-South; Now He Runs Against Them, Loses Base-Onyeagocha

Former House of Representatives member and pro-democracy activist, Honourable Uche Onyeagocha, has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar risks losing a significant portion of his traditional support base in southern Nigeria due to his current political decisions.

Speaking during an interview featured in a video posted on the official YouTube channel of SYMFONI TV on Sunday, June 7, 2026, Onyeagocha argued that Atiku’s strongest backing over the years came from the South-East and South-South regions.

According to him, many voters in the two regions have consistently supported Atiku in previous elections and played a major role in sustaining his political relevance on the national stage. However, he suggested that recent developments may have weakened that relationship.

Onyeagocha stated, “No group has supported Atiku as much as the South-East and the South-South. Now that he has decided to run against the interests of the South-South and the South-East, he has lost his real base.”

The former lawmaker maintained that political leaders must remain sensitive to the aspirations and expectations of their core supporters. He argued that when politicians are perceived to be acting contrary to the interests of those who have stood by them for years, they risk losing public trust and electoral support.

He further noted that political alignments ahead of the 2027 general election are gradually taking shape, adding that voter sentiment in different regions could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the presidential contest.
