According to a report by the Cable on Wednesday, May 19, 2026, the family of Michael Oyedokun, the schoolteacher who was killed by bandits while in captivity on Sunday, has urged the public to refrain from circulating disturbing footage of his death.
They described the continued sharing of such graphic content as deeply painful.
Oyedokun was among several teachers kidnapped during an attack on Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on Friday.
The incident was part of a broader wave of assaults on schools in the area.
Other affected institutions included Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota and LA Primary School in Ogbomoso, all located within Oriire LGA.
The attacks turned deadly, claiming the lives of an assistant headmaster, Joel Adesiyan, and a commercial motorcyclist.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Oyo State Government ordered the closure of schools across four local government areas, while security agencies intensified efforts to rescue those still being held.
Tensions escalated further after a video, reportedly released by the attackers, surfaced online on Monday.
The footage showed Oyedokun bound and compelled to speak before he was eventually killed. Its circulation sparked widespread outrage on social media and renewed fears about the safety of other abducted victims.
Amid the grief, Oyedokun’s family, in a statement shared through the Instagram page of social media influencer Temilola Sobola, made an emotional appeal to the public.
