Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has stirred political debate following comments he made during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, May 11, 2026.

Speaking on the issue of political power and leadership in Nigeria, Sowore argued that many politicians who seek office often have no intention of stepping down after serving only one term.

During the interview, Sowore expressed doubt over promises made by some political figures who claim they would willingly leave office after four years if elected. In his words, he said, “Don’t let anybody lie to you, there is nobody who gets power in Nigeria and wants to leave in four years, they are just fooling those who might want to be fooled.”

The outspoken activist maintained that political leaders in the country often make promises aimed at winning public sympathy ahead of elections, but reality tends to change once they assume office.

Sowore suggested that Nigerians should be careful about accepting such declarations at face value, stressing that history has repeatedly shown how difficult it is for leaders to voluntarily give up political authority….See More
