In a recent statement via his official X account, Kenneth Okonkwo, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
”President Bola Tinubu accepted this strategy of APC to destabilise the opposition when he declared that it would be his pleasure and he would be happy to see the opposition disintegrate. Followers read the lips of their leader and act accordingly. The overbearing influence of the ruling party to ensure that opposition parties do not participate in the 2027 election to ensure that Tinubu runs unopposed is suffocating the opposition,” he wrote.
In his post, Okonkwo claimed that some actions and statements by top government officials suggest efforts to destabilize the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as one of the major opposition platforms in the country.
He referred to comments reportedly made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio concerning defections involving ADC lawmakers in the Senate, he argued that despite recent defections, the ADC remains one of the largest opposition parties in the upper legislative chamber.
The former Labour Party spokesperson also mentioned remarks allegedly made by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, according to Okonkwo, the comments suggested support for efforts aimed at weakening the ADC through internal disputes and legal battles.
He further referred to political disagreements involving party figures such as Nafiu Bala Gombe, who reportedly approached the courts over leadership issues within the ADC, he claimed the growing legal disputes around the party are contributing to instability within the opposition camp.
Okonkwo alleged that the ruling party is benefiting from divisions among opposition groups and attempting to exploit those weaknesses politically, he warned that such developments could reduce healthy political competition and weaken democratic balance in the country.
According to him, the inability of some opposition parties to manage discipline and resolve disputes among members has created opportunities for political interference, he urged opposition leaders to strengthen party structures and remain united ahead of the next election cycle….See More
