According to a report by Punch newspaper on May 2, 2026, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, has advised young women to prioritise financial responsibility and personal character when choosing a life partner, rather than being influenced solely by outward displays of religious devotion.
Speaking to a congregation, the 82-year-old cleric warned that strong religious expression does not necessarily reflect true responsibility or maturity. “A man can shout ‘hallelujah’ louder than anyone in the building and still be irresponsible,” he said, adding, “Before you say yes, find out if he can take care of you.”
Adeboye encouraged women to carefully assess qualities such as a man’s work ethic, his financial habits, how he treats people of lower social status, and how he speaks about others in private. According to him, these traits provide a more accurate picture of a person’s character than their behavior in religious settings.
On the issue of financial stability, he was particularly direct, noting that a man who struggles to manage his own finances before marriage is unlikely to effectively handle the responsibilities of a household afterward. He stressed that emotional or spiritual enthusiasm alone cannot sustain a family, pointing out that “romantic fervour does not pay school fees.”
His remarks reflect a more practical approach to relationship guidance, focusing on real-life responsibilities rather than ideals alone. Adeboye also cautioned against individuals who use religious language or appearances to gain trust without demonstrating genuine integrity in their daily lives.
The message has since gained attention online, resonating with many young Nigerian women navigating societal expectations around marriage, where visible religiosity is sometimes mistaken for accountability and readiness for long-term commitment….See More
