There can be no meaningful elections if citizens do not feel safe in their own communities–Amaechi

According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, has urged the Federal Government to suspend all ongoing political campaign activities and redirect its attention to the growing insecurity challenges affecting different parts of the country.

He made the appeal while addressing concerns on the current state of the nation, noting that the situation requires urgent and coordinated intervention rather than continued political engagements.

He explained that the rising wave of insecurity across various communities has reached a level that should no longer be treated as a routine issue.

According to him, the severity of the situation demands that it be elevated to a national emergency, one that must take priority over political campaigns and other electoral activities currently underway across the country.

Amaechi further emphasized that many communities are experiencing fear and uncertainty due to frequent security breaches.

He noted that citizens in several areas are struggling with safety concerns that affect their daily lives, movement, and economic activities.

He stressed that addressing these challenges should be the immediate focus of government attention instead of concentrating on political mobilization.

He also pointed out that governance and national security must be placed above partisan interests, especially at a time when many citizens are directly affected by insecurity.

He argued that political activities lose their essence if the environment in which they are conducted is not safe for the electorate.

According to him, stability and protection of lives should be the foundation of any democratic process.

The former minister added that continued emphasis on electioneering campaigns while insecurity persists sends the wrong message to citizens who are already living in fear.

He maintained that the government must take decisive steps to ensure that citizens feel secure in their communities before focusing on electoral competition and political campaigns.
