Oyedele:I Am Not Surprised the President Wants to Fix the Economy and Say, ‘Let Me Follow Him-Akande

Political analyst and former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, has said he is not surprised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to back the newly appointed finance minister, Taiwo Ayodele, noting that the move reflects a deliberate effort to stabilise Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, April 23, 2026, Akande argued that the president’s confidence in the new appointee stems from a clear desire to prioritise economic reforms and results.

“I am not surprised that the president, at this point, wants to fix the economy and say, ‘let me follow him,’” Akande said, referring to the new finance minister’s rising influence within the administration.

According to the analyst, the president appears to be aligning himself with technocrats he believes can deliver on key fiscal and economic objectives. He suggested that this shift underscores a broader recalibration within the administration, where competence and performance are becoming central to decision-making.

Akande’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns about Nigeria’s fiscal stability, including revenue shortfalls, mounting debt obligations, and delays in budget implementation. By throwing his weight behind the new finance minister, the president is signalling confidence in a strategy aimed at restoring credibility and improving economic management.

The analyst further implied that the decision reflects a pragmatic leadership approach, where the president is willing to rely on individuals he trusts to navigate complex economic challenges—even if it means reshaping existing power dynamics within the cabinet.

While expectations remain high, Akande’s comments suggest that the administration is betting on the new finance minister’s expertise to drive reforms and reposition the economy in the months ahead….See More
