I Don’t Think BAT, Atiku, Obi, Or Any Other Person Will Do What Goodluck Jonathan Did— Shehu Sani

In a recent interview on television, former Nigerian senator and human rights activist Shehu Sani spoke during a live political discussion where he reflected on Nigeria’s electoral history, democratic processes, and the conduct of past and present political leaders.

During the interview, Sani stated, “I don’t think what Goodluck Jonathan did, BAT, Atiku, Obi, or any other person will do.” He made the remark while discussing the independence of electoral institutions and the significance of political decisions made during the 2015 general elections.

He explained that former President Goodluck Jonathan demonstrated a notable example of democratic commitment by appointing an INEC chairman and later conceding defeat in the presidential election, which he described as a rare moment in Nigeria’s political history.

Sani argued that such actions remain significant in shaping Nigeria’s democratic image, noting that peaceful transitions of power are critical to strengthening institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He further suggested that while many political leaders have emerged since then, the specific circumstances surrounding Jonathan’s conduct in office and his acceptance of electoral defeat remain difficult to replicate in Nigerian politics.

According to him, discussions about electoral integrity should focus on how leaders respect institutional independence and uphold democratic outcomes, regardless of political advantage.

Sani also referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former presidential candidate Peter Obi, noting that Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve but still faces challenges in building strong democratic traditions.

He concluded by emphasizing that democratic progress is measured not only by who wins elections, but also by how leaders respect processes, institutions, and outcomes when the political contest is concluded….See More
