According to a report by Vanguard on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his confidence that democratic governance in Nigeria will endure despite the array of political and economic challenges facing the country.
He maintained that the democratic system remains stable and will continue to function in the face of pressure from different quarters.
The president also directed criticism at members of the opposition, alleging that while they publicly present themselves as defenders of democratic ideals, some of their actions contradict the principles they claim to support.
He maintained that confidence in democracy is rooted in ongoing institutional efforts and national resilience.
He made the comments during an engagement held at the State House, where he received a delegation from Enugu State.
The delegation was led by Governor Peter Mbah and included senior state representatives who visited Abuja for discussions relating to governance priorities, development issues, and collaboration between the federal and state levels, he noted routine consultations between federal and state governments continue.
The president criticized past policy decisions within the power sector, particularly focusing on the privatization process, which he argued has not delivered the expected improvements in electricity generation and distribution.
He stated that the system inherited by the current administration was significantly weakened, contributing to widespread power supply challenges that continue to affect households, businesses, and industrial activities across the country.
He emphasized that addressing these shortcomings remains a central focus of ongoing sector reforms efforts.
He linked the present electricity situation to the outcomes of earlier reforms and policy approaches, noting that inadequate infrastructure and inefficiencies have left the nation with persistent energy shortages.
He stressed that the consequences of those decisions are still being felt, as the country continues to struggle with meeting rising demand for reliable electricity supply across different sectors.
He pointed to continued improvement in energy infrastructure nationwide needed.
He also directed criticism toward opposition politicians, accusing them of failing to align their public statements with their actual conduct in the political space.
He argued that while they frequently present themselves as advocates of democratic governance, their actions, according to him, reflect a contradiction of those professed values, particularly in relation to how they engage with national political discourse, he reiterated that political discourse should align with democratic responsibility.
He urged that such criticisms from political opponents should not be given attention, adding that he personally chooses to disregard them in order to concentrate on governance and administrative responsibilities and urged focus on governance issues.
