I Was Thinking Atiku Would Leave The Stage For Younger People But He Said He’s Contesting – Sen Umeh

Senator Victor Umeh has raised concerns over internal dynamics within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that disagreements among presidential aspirants could weaken the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sen. Umeh made the remarks in a post shared via the X account (formerly Twitter) of Fearless Blogger on Monday, April 20, 2026, while reacting to recent political developments involving key opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

“It’s very strange that the ADC presidential aspirants haven’t started developing a spirit of consideration for a consensus,” Umeh said.

He cautioned that insisting on direct primaries instead of a consensus arrangement could create divisions within the party.

“If everybody is insisting on a direct primary instead of a consensus, then they’re preparing to kill the party,” he stated.

Referencing a recent interview granted by Atiku, Umeh noted that the former vice president had reaffirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

“I listened to your interview with Atiku, and he said 2027 will be the last time he’ll run for the presidency. So, he’s running,” he said.

The senator expressed surprise at the development, suggesting that Atiku could consider stepping aside for younger aspirants within the party.

“At this stage, having followed the discussions on the best thing ADC should do, I was thinking that Atiku would leave the stage for younger people, but he said he’s contesting,” Umeh added.

He further emphasised the need for restraint among aspirants, warning that a highly competitive contest could harm party unity.

“He’s supposed to be a father at this stage and at his age. If all the aspirants go all out to wrestle, it may get to the point that some people will have bloody noses, and this will cause the party to suffer in the presidential election,” Umeh said…See More
