According to Al-Jazeera, Iran has mobilized more than one million combatants and organized them for a potential ground battle against the United States, according to a military source cited by state-run Tasnim News Agency on Thursday.
The source told Tasnim that amid speculation of a possible US “historical folly” involving a ground invasion on Iran’s southern front, a wave of enthusiasm has swept through Iranian ground forces.
They are reportedly eager to create a “historical hell” for American troops on Iranian soil. In addition to the million-plus fighters already prepared, recruitment centers of the Basij militia, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and regular army have seen a massive influx of volunteer applications from young Iranians in recent days.
The announcement comes as tensions between Tehran and Washington remain elevated following weeks of regional conflict involving US and Israeli strikes.
Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that any direct American ground incursion would meet fierce resistance, turning the country into a quagmire for invading forces.
Analysts note that the figure of over one million likely includes regular IRGC and army personnel alongside the large Basij paramilitary force, which draws from civilian volunteers and is known for its ideological mobilization.
Some reports also mention lowered recruitment ages and heightened patriotic appeals as part of the effort.
Western observers and military experts have expressed skepticism about the exact numbers and combat effectiveness, pointing to Iran’s history of inflating capabilities in propaganda.
However, the claim underscores Tehran’s strategy of asymmetric warfare combined with mass mobilization to deter any large-scale ground operation.
The development adds to growing concerns of escalation in the Middle East. US officials have so far focused primarily on air and naval operations in the region, with no public indication of plans for a ground invasion of Iran.
