Don’t Drag Nigeria Into Trump Controversy – Shehu Sani Warns

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has warned Nigerians against circulating fabricated statements attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump, cautioning that such actions could draw unnecessary attention to the country amid rising global tensions. He made the remarks in a post shared on his official X account on March 17, 2026.

In the statement, Sani advised those spreading or exaggerating claims about Trump’s comments on Nigeria to desist, stressing that doing so could potentially redirect international focus and frustration toward the country. He emphasized that Nigeria should not be entangled in controversies that do not directly concern it.

“Those who are faking Trump’s statement on Nigeria should desist from such acts in order not to divert his anger and frustration towards us. Don’t make us a scapegoat. Allow him to concentrate on other issues,” he wrote.

Sani’s comments come amid growing global attention on tensions involving the United States and Iran, with discussions around possible international involvement continuing to generate debate. He suggested that attempts to link Nigeria to such issues through misinformation are both unnecessary and potentially harmful.

Providing further context, Sani noted that several countries have shown reluctance to support calls for broader international participation in the conflict. According to him, key allies in Europe, including United Kingdom, France, and Germany, have reportedly declined involvement, maintaining that the conflict does not directly concern them.

He added that similar hesitation has been observed among countries in Asia and other regions, despite the strategic importance of global trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. Sani argued that this widespread caution reflects concerns about escalation, economic risks, and broader geopolitical consequences.
