Former CIA Lead National Intelligence Officer for Iran, Norman Roule, has said the leadership of Iran is not only focused on winning the ongoing conflict but also on ensuring its long-term survival after the war ends.
Roule made the remarks during an interview with NewsNation on Saturday, March 14, 2026, where he discussed the strategic mindset of Iran’s ruling establishment amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
According to the former intelligence official, the current leadership circle in Tehran consists largely of figures who were selected by the late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and who share a similar ideological outlook about preserving the Islamic Republic.
“They are not just fighting for victory in this conflict. They are fighting to ensure that once this conflict ends, six weeks later the Israelis or the United States won’t try to kill them again,” Roule said during the broadcast.
He suggested that the Iranian leadership is motivated by a deep concern about regime survival, which could shape its decisions throughout the conflict. In Roule’s assessment, the leaders in Tehran are likely to view the war not only as a military confrontation but also as an existential struggle to ensure that their government remains intact after hostilities subside.
Roule noted that such concerns may prolong the conflict, as Iranian decision-makers may seek guarantees that their leadership will not face renewed military action once the current fighting ends.
His comments highlight the complex strategic calculations surrounding the war, with analysts suggesting that fears about long-term security and political survival could heavily influence how the Iranian leadership approaches negotiations, military operations, and the broader geopolitical contest involving the United States and its regional allies….See More
