As the world marks International Women’s Day, many Nigerians are celebrating remarkable women who have made significant contributions to national development and global progress. Among them are several distinguished women whose achievements in leadership, finance, sports, literature, and medicine continue to inspire millions.

Dora Akunyili was one of Nigeria’s most respected public servants. She served as the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) from 2001 to 2008. During her leadership, she led a strong campaign against counterfeit drugs in Nigeria, drastically reducing the circulation of fake medicines in the country. Her work earned her international recognition. She later served as Nigeria’s Minister of Information, where she advocated for transparency and reforms before her passing in 2014.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is another globally respected Igbo woman. She currently serves as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), making history in 2021 as the first woman and first African to lead the organization. Before her appointment, she served twice as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and also worked for many years at the World Bank, where she rose to the position of Managing Director.

Oby Ezekwesili is widely known for her work in governance, transparency, and education reform. She served as Nigeria’s Minister of Education and later became Vice President of the World Bank for Africa. Ezekwesili also played a key role in the #BringBackOurGirls movement, advocating for the rescue of schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in 2014.

Arunma Oteh is an accomplished financial expert who served as the Director-General of Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). During her tenure, she worked to strengthen Nigeria’s capital market and improve regulatory standards. She later served as Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank, managing billions of dollars in global financial assets.

Chioma Ajunwa made history in sports by becoming the first Nigerian woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She achieved this remarkable feat at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, where she won the long jump event. Her victory remains one of Nigeria’s proudest moments in athletics and inspired many young athletes across the country.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a globally celebrated writer and public intellectual. She is the author of internationally acclaimed novels such as “Half of a Yellow Sun,” “Americanah,” and “Purple Hibiscus.” Through her storytelling, Adichie has helped bring African stories and perspectives to a global audience, while also speaking on issues related to identity, culture, and gender equality.

Professor Nnenna Oti is a respected medical professional and the Chief Medical Director of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Ebonyi State. She gained national attention during the 2023 general elections for her commitment to protecting the integrity of election results at the collation center located in her hospital.

Justina Ejelonu is remembered as a courageous Nigerian health worker who lost her life during the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Nigeria. She was among the frontline medical staff who responded to the crisis, and her sacrifice is widely honored as an example of dedication and service to humanity.
