According to a report by Daily Post, on Tuesday February 24, 2026, former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has called on the federal government to explain the whereabouts and health condition of Nasir El-Rufai, stating that Nigerians deserve clear information about the former governor’s detention.
Atiku spoke about growing public concern over El-Rufai’s safety and welfare, the former vice president asked the government to state the agency holding El-Rufai.
He mentioned security and anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, and the Department of State Services.
Atiku said secrecy around detention cases can create suspicion among citizens, he said the government must protect El-Rufai’s dignity and rights while he is in custody and added that the former governor should have access to medical care, family members, and lawyers.
Reports that El-Rufai allegedly suffered a nosebleed while in detention worried Atiku, he said such reports were disturbing if true and stated that family members should not be denied access to detained persons in a democratic system.
Atiku warned that the government could face public blame if anything bad happens to El-Rufai, he said authorities must act quickly to protect the former governor’s health.
The politician spoke about what he called selective prosecution, he said there is a public perception that opposition figures are being targeted more than others and urged authorities to avoid using anti-corruption campaigns for political purposes.
