Iran Warns Against Desecration Of National Flag As Student Protests Continue

According to an Iran International English report of Tuesday 24 of February 2026, Iranian government has issued a warning against the burning or insulting of the national flag during the ongoing student protests, while reiterating that demonstrations themselves are permitted under the law. The remarks come amid heightened tensions on university campuses and growing circulation of protest footage online.

Videos shared widely on social media platforms in recent days have shown groups of students at university rallies burning, trampling or otherwise defacing the flag of the Islamic Republic. The images have drawn strong reactions from officials, who say that such actions cross established boundaries even when protests are lawful.

Speaking at a regular press briefing, government spokesperson, Fatemeh Mohajerani, sought to strike a balance between acknowledging students’ rights and signalling the limits set by the state. She said that demonstrations are allowed but stressed that certain symbols remain protected.

According to Mohajerani, students have a “right to protest,” but she added that crossing red lines, including actions involving “sanctities and the flag,” is “not acceptable.” Her comments reflected a broader official stance that distinguishes between political dissent and acts viewed as offensive to national or religious symbols.

Officials argue that such acts risk inflaming tensions and undermining public order at a time when authorities say that stability must be preserved. Government figures have repeatedly maintained that protests should remain peaceful and within legal frameworks, particularly in sensitive spaces such as universities.

Mohajerani also rejected claims that unrest has paralyzed daily life across the country, pushing back against what officials describe as hostile narratives amplified abroad. “We must show that, contrary to what the enemy says, life in Iran is not disrupted and continues,” she said…..See More
