Iran Sacks Local TV Chief After Reporter Chants Death To Khamenei On Live Broadcast

According to a report by The Times Of Israel on February 12, 2026, Iranian authorities have dismissed a provincial television director following a controversial moment during a live broadcast in which a reporter appeared to call for the death of the country’s supreme leader.

The incident occurred during coverage of the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province, where state television was airing rallies and official commemorations. The broadcast was intended to highlight participation and showcase loyalty to the Islamic Republic through commonly heard slogans and chants.

During the live feed, reporter Musab Rasoulizad was describing the turnout at the rallies and repeating chants heard in the crowd, such as “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for God is great. The chant is frequently used at state-organized events and is often included in official coverage to reflect support for the government and its leadership.

However, in a moment that quickly drew attention, Rasoulizad then said “Marg bar Khamenei” (Death to Khamenei), rather than one of the chants typically heard at such government-organized rallies, which include “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.” The phrase is considered highly sensitive and taboo in official Iranian media, particularly during nationally televised state ceremonies.

Following the broadcast, authorities moved swiftly to address the incident. The provincial television director was removed from his position, signaling an effort to demonstrate accountability and reinforce strict editorial controls within state media.

Officials said the decision was made in order to “maintain professional discipline and safeguard the media’s reputation.”
