Cohen: To The Hamas Leadership, There Will Be No Immunity, There Will Be No Mercy, And Forgiveness

According to Jerusalem Post, Eliya Cohen, whose brother is among the hostages held in Gaza, delivered an impassioned plea to Israeli lawmakers, as the Knesset advanced a preliminary bill seeking to impose the death penalty on convicted Hamas terrorists.

Speaking outside the parliamentary assembly, Cohen urged legislators to act swiftly against the captors who have held approximately 240 individuals since the October 7 cross-border attack.

“I am speaking from the depths of a family that is living a waking nightmare, Cohen said. “Every day that passes, we fear for my brother’s life and the lives of all the hostages. The time for restraint is over, we need to press the button on Hamas terrorists who committed these atrocities.

The proposed legislation, which passed its preliminary reading, would allow military courts to impose capital punishment on those convicted of terrorism offenses. Currently, Israel has only ever executed one person, Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, in 1962.

Proponents argue the bill serves as a necessary deterrent. Opponents, including some security officials, warn it could endanger hostages and complicate future prisoner exchanges.

Cohen directly addressed the terror group during his remarks. “To the Hamas leadership, there will be no immunity, there will be no mercy, and there will be no forgiveness, he stated.

The bill now moves to the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee for further deliberation before subsequent votes. Its advancement reflects mounting public anger as the hostage crisis enters its second month with no breakthrough in sight.
