Human rights lawyer Aloy Ejimakor has expressed concern over the regional spread of 16 newly appointed directors at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). His comments came after the list of new directors, assigned to key departments within the apex bank, was made public.
“If it’s true that these are the 16 new Directors appointed to the CBN, why would Southeast get only one slot? Poor Southeast, my Southeast. Even the big North got only 3 and South-South (where most of the money at the CBN comes from) got only 1,” Ejimakor wrote on his official X account.
In his post, Ejimakor described the appointments as unevenly distributed across the country’s geopolitical zones, with the South-East notably receiving just one position. He called the situation troubling, noting that it reflects a persistent pattern of imbalance in federal appointments.
Ejimakor also highlighted that other regions did not fare much better. The North, despite its large population and political influence, secured only three positions, while the South-South, a region he emphasized contributes significantly to national revenue received only one slot. According to him, such an allocation raises serious questions about fairness, inclusivity, and equity in national institutions.
He argued that appointments to critical agencies like the CBN should reflect the diversity of Nigeria’s population, adding that equal representation across geopolitical zones helps build public trust in government institutions. Ejimakor warned that the perception of exclusion could reinforce feelings of marginalization among affected regions and may undermine confidence in national decision-making processes.
The lawyer’s remarks underscore ongoing debates about fairness and regional balance in federal appointments, particularly in high-profile and economically strategic institutions such as the Central Bank of Nigeria. For Ejimakor, ensuring that appointments are proportionally and fairly distributed is not only a matter of justice but also a step toward fostering unity and equity in governance.
