Fubara Should Have Resigned From The Governorship Or Not Gone Into This Battle With Wike – Dahiru

Majeed Dahiru, an analyst and columnist, has criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara for miscalculating his choices at the beginning of the political turmoil in Rivers State. He claims the dispute with former Governor Nyesom Wike could have been avoided. In an interview with Symfoni TV, Dahiru emphasized that this conflict stems from poor decision-making rather than being unavoidable.

Dahiru suggested that Fubara should have either resigned from the governorship or refrained from clashing with Wike, arguing that the governor underestimated the consequences of confronting a well-established power structure. He believes that recognizing Wike’s ongoing influence in politics should have led Fubara to retreat strategically.

He reiterated that political conflicts are influenced by power dynamics, alliances, and control of institutions, rather than purely moral considerations. Dahiru pointed out that Fubara misjudged the strength of the political system that brought him to power and mistakenly assumed that national leaders would support him against a formidable former governor.

The analyst noted that while resignation might have been politically detrimental, it could have safeguarded Fubara’s future relevance and moral standing, instead of subjecting him to ongoing pressure that has compromised governance in the state. He added that opting to avoid escalations could have enabled the governor to prioritize administration and gradually accumulate political strength.

Dahiru further emphasized that the crisis in Rivers reflects a common issue in Nigerian politics, where successors try to assert independence without dismantling the connections to their predecessors. Such conflicts often lead to prolonged instability, power struggles among elites, and paralysis in policymaking.

He cautioned that the ongoing conflict has diverted attention from governance, turning Rivers State into a battleground for elite competition. He stated that it is the citizens who ultimately suffer when leaders prioritize power over strategic foresight.

Dahiru concluded by stating that effective leadership sometimes requires restraint instead of confrontation, highlighting that knowing when to avoid conflict can be just as crucial as knowing how to achieve victory.
