Speaking during an interview on TVC News, a member of the House of Representatives representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, strongly rejected the idea of negotiating with bandits and insurgents as a means of addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Doguwa stated that he has consistently opposed negotiation as a strategy for rescuing abducted citizens, insisting that such an approach only strengthens criminal elements.
The lawmaker made it clear that his stance has remained unchanged over the years, even during periods when negotiation was publicly advocated by some influential figures.
He referenced Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Gumi, noting that the cleric’s approach was based on personal beliefs and interpretations, not a solution he personally supports.
He stated, “I, for one, have never, under any circumstances, agreed with the approach of negotiation. Even when Gumi was doing it, that was his own personal understanding of resolving the issue. But I can tell you for free that I have never subscribed to negotiating with bandits and insurgents to restore abducted innocent Nigerians, because you will end up simply empowering them.”
Doguwa argued that negotiating with criminal groups creates a cycle where bandits see kidnapping and violence as profitable ventures.
