Kunle Kuti, one of the sons of the late Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, has stated that the Kuti family is a very big and important family in Nigeria.
In a video shared by The Cable on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Kunle said many people do not know that his grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was among those who went to negotiate for Nigeria’s independence. He stated that she was present and played a role during that important period in the country’s history.
Kunle also stated that his father, Fela Kuti, put Nigeria on the world map through music and culture in ways many people may not fully understand.
In Kunle’s words: “Most people don’t know that my grandmother was one of the people that went to negotiate for Nigeria’s independence, she was there. And what Fela stood for, Fela put Nigeria on the map musically, culturally anyhow you want to view it”
