The National President of Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Baba Ngelzarma, has provided insights into cattle ownership distribution across the country during an interview with News Central TV.
Addressing concerns about pastoral communities and insecurity, Ngelzarma revealed the demographic composition of livestock ownership in Nigeria.
“95% of the cattle ownership coincidentally in Nigeria belongs to the pastoralists who are coincidentally Fulani,” he stated.
The revelation came as the Myetti Allah leader explained why pastoral communities are disproportionately affected by cattle rustling and kidnapping incidents. He emphasized that Fulani pastoralists bear the brunt of livestock-related crimes due to their dominant role in the cattle industry.
Ngelzarma further highlighted that pastoralists face daily security challenges that often go unreported. He noted that while urban kidnappings receive significant media attention, hundreds of pastoralists are abducted in forests regularly without public awareness.
The statement was made during discussions about recent US Congressional sanctions against certain groups and individuals over alleged religious freedom violations and human rights abuses.
Ngelzarma used the opportunity to defend his association, arguing that Myetti Allah members are victims rather than perpetrators of violence. He presented evidence showing pastoralists have suffered significant losses from criminal activities affecting Nigeria’s livestock sector.
