Former Lagos State Governor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Babatunde Raji Fashola, alongside his wife, Dame Abimbola Fashola, has spoken publicly about their interfaith marriage and shared personal reflections on faith and partnership. The couple spoke during an interview on The Morayo Show official YouTube Podcast, hosted by former TVC anchor, Afolabi-Brown Morayo, aired on Monday, February 2, 2026.
During the programme, the host explained the reason for inviting the couple, citing widespread relationship challenges faced by many Nigerians. “So, we brought you here, the two of you here, because we want to learn from you,” Morayo said. She referenced religious teachings on marriage, particularly the biblical caution against being “unequally yoked.” “A lot of people are struggling with their relationships,” she said, adding, “The Bible you and I read says, Thou shall not be unequally yoked with an unbeliever.”
Morayo questioned how the Fasholas had sustained their marriage despite differing religious beliefs. “He’s an unbeliever. How have you been unequally yoked?” she asked. Responding, Mrs. Fashola described her experience in positive terms. “My yoke has been very beautiful. Very, very beautiful,” she said.
She stated that her marriage had been without regret or complaint. “No cause for complaints at all,” she added. Mrs. Fashola attributed the stability of their union to divine purpose. “And I guess, and I know that if God has made you for one another, there really is no yoke anywhere,” she said.
She emphasized shared faith in God rather than religious labels. “It’s all about God. And God sees both of us and knows us,” she said. Turning to Mr. Fashola, the host raised concerns often associated with interfaith marriages. She asked why he chose to marry a Christian, noting fears about polygamy. “Because I’m always afraid of that second, third, fourth wife factor,” Morayo said.
Reacting, Fashola questioned the definition of belief used in the discussion. “You were asking my wife that she married an unbeliever. So, whose belief are we talking about?” he said. He noted that religious perspectives differ across faiths. “There is another version where Islam also says non-Islamic practitioners are unbelievers,” he stated.
Fashola shared details of his upbringing, describing strong Christian influences in his early life. “My maternal grandparents were Christians. They were Anglicans,” he said. He recalled attending church regularly during his childhood. “So, every Sunday, as the sun shines, I am in St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Ebutemeta,” he said.
Fashola explained that his household emphasized service to God rather than denominational divisions. “The rule in our house was not about Christianity or Islam. It was that you must serve God,” he said. Addressing concerns about polygamy, he responded briefly. “And, as for the Khadijas and the Fatimas. They are God’s creatures too. They will find their way,” he said….. SEE_MORE
