Years Ago, If You Are An Ogoni Person Working In NNPC, They Will Sack You For Lots Of Reasons -Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has stated that the Ogoni people were historically marginalized in Nigeria’s oil sector, particularly in institutions like the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and Shell. He said Ogoni workers were often dismissed or excluded due to perceptions that their presence posed a threat to corporate interests.

In a video aired by SYMFONI TV on Monday, December 22, 2025, Governor Fubara said that in the past, Ogoni individuals working in NNPC were sacked for various reasons, and those employed by Shell were deliberately pushed out. He said this was due to a long-standing belief that Ogoni presence in the oil industry was a threat to the operations of these companies.

Governor Fubara said the situation has since changed, and today, both men and women of Ogoni origin are employed in NNPC, marking a significant shift from the past.

His words, “Some years ago, even if you are an Ogoni person working in NNPC, they will sack you for lots of reasons. Even those of them that were working in Shell that time, they looked for a way to make sure that you don’t… because they believed that being there is a threat to the cooperation. But today, we have both men and women of Ogoni extraction that are already employed in NNPC.”
