A 45-year-old man is in police custody in Tetu, Nyeri County, after his wife said she found him with a goat inside their animal shelter and that the confrontation escalated into threats and violence.
According to the area OCPD, Steven Obara, the incident began when Cecilia Muthoni Waigwa became suspicious after her husband, Alexander Waigwa Waweru, entered the goat shelter and was seen handling one of the animals by the tail.
Mrs. Waigwa told police she walked in and raised an alarm, which drew neighbors’ attention. She also alleged that after she confronted him, her husband attempted to harm her and set fire to the house. “He grabbed a jerrycan of paraffin but it was too late. He later grabbed a machete to kill the wife but we intervened,” Mr. Obara said.
Police described the suspect as a dangerous and uncooperative man who had previously served a five-year prison sentence and was later released. He was taken to Nyeri Police Station where he remains in custody as investigations continue.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Nyeri said officers are pursuing charges related to animal cruelty and attempted violence against a person. Veterinary officers have also been involved to assess the animal involved.
Bestiality is a criminal offense in Kenya under the Penal Code, and cases involving threats or assault are treated separately by police.
The incident shocked residents of Tetu. Neighbors said they intervened after hearing the alarm and helped restrain the suspect until police arrived. Local leaders have urged families to report domestic disturbances early and to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
Police have not released further details pending the conclusion of investigations. Mr. Obara said the case file will be forwarded to prosecutors once statements from witnesses, medical reports, and veterinary findings are complete.
