Henry Ekine, a human rights lawyer and political analyst, has reacted to rumours that Nyesom Wike’s son, who is often seen accompanying him on official tours, is preparing to run for political office in Rivers State.
In an interview with News Central TV, Ekine said there is nothing wrong with Wike’s son seeking political office or being appointed to any position if he is qualified under the constitution. He stated that Wike’s son is an individual with his own rights, regardless of who his father is.
However, Ekine said his concern is when Wike’s son performs public functions or attends official events without holding any public office. He said if Wike’s son acts in such capacities simply because of his father’s position it should not be tolerated.
In Ekine’s words: “My worry and concern is where he performs seeming public functions where he is not empowered or entitled to so perform, or where he becomes a delegate, just like when the minister may attend delegate conference on behalf of Nigeria outside this country and then he becomes a delegate probably by reason of his father being the minister. That is where for me conflict of interest arises and that should not be tolerated”
