“Wike Never Declared Support For Any Candidate On Behalf Of The PDP Or The G5” -George Tarnah

According to a report by Channels Television, on Monday, February 2, 2026, George Tarnah, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), refuted claims that Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, spoke or acted on behalf of the PDP or the G5 governors in endorsing any presidential candidate.

Tarnah dismissed the allegations as false and misleading, noting that they do not reflect the true history of the party’s internal affairs. He explained that at no time did Wike present himself as the official voice of the PDP or the G5 group.

Speaking during a televised programme, Tarnah clarified that Wike remains a PDP member who is entitled to his personal political views. He stressed that individual political choices should not be misrepresented as collective decisions.

“Wike never declared support for any candidate on behalf of the PDP or the G5,” Tarnah said. He added that decisions within a democratic party must follow laid-down principles rather than assumptions or external narratives.

Tarnah further explained that the G5 governors held different political positions during the 2023 general elections. While Wike openly expressed his personal preference, other members of the group made their own independent decisions. According to him, this clearly shows that no single individual dictated the political direction of the group.

He also noted that democracy thrives on freedom of choice and expression, arguing that party members should not be punished for holding personal opinions. Tarnah stated that a strong political party encourages dialogue and consultation before arriving at any collective position.

Addressing the lingering crisis within the PDP, Tarnah observed that court actions alone cannot resolve deep political divisions. He emphasised that sincere reconciliation can only be achieved through dialogue and direct engagement among party stakeholders.

Reflecting on the 2023 presidential election, Tarnah expressed disappointment over what he described as a missed opportunity for the party. He attributed the loss to internal challenges, including poor accountability and the failure of some party leaders to adhere to party rules.

Despite these challenges, Tarnah maintained that the PDP remains a strong and influential political party in Nigeria. He called on party leaders and members to strengthen communication and uphold democratic values as they work toward unity ahead of future elections.
