Human rights activist Chidi Odinkalu has reacted to the recent clash between the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer during a land dispute in Abuja. Speaking in an interview with Signature TV, Odinkalu explained that the incident could have turned into a dangerous and tragic situation because of the number of armed security officers present at the scene.
According to him, the environment was tense, and with so many guns around, a simple mistake could have led to someone being shot. He stressed that even the minister himself was at risk. Odinkalu described Wike’s conduct as careless and lacking concern for human life, including his own. He argued that leaders are expected to act responsibly, especially around armed personnel, but Wike behaved in a way that could have caused unnecessary violence.
Odinkalu noted that the minister was fortunate that the young naval officer involved kept calm and did not act out of fear or anger. He suggested that if anything had gone wrong, the officer would likely have survived the incident, while the minister might have been harmed.
In his words, “He’s lucky that he met a young man who was not trigger-happy, because if anything had happened to him, the young man would still be alive. And you will still have a lot of people defending him.”
