Former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Ejiofor Egwuatu, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the properties linked to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, stressing that proper asset declaration is the key issue.
In an interview with Voice Of The People TV, Egwuatu emphasized that the law provides a clear process for declaring assets, regardless of how they were acquired.
“First of all, there are procedures for declaration of assets, stating whatever you have, where you had it, how you had it—everything follows a particular process. And then if you are declaring your assets, you are expected to list everything that you have at every point,” he said.
Egwuatu noted that even if Wike’s properties came as gifts from wealthy in-laws, they must be accounted for transparently. “So the question we should be asking is: even if this is a gift, this is something that is coming from very wealthy in-laws, relatively wealthy in-laws and all the rest of them, given to this family, then you are expected to say this is how it is through a legal process in Nigeria here,” he added.
The former lawmaker argued that Nigerians should not confuse the issue with Wike’s past office as governor. “He hasn’t told us that he acquired those things from being a governor. So we shouldn’t go to that governor’s salary,” he stressed.
Egwuatu maintained that the matter was one of legality and accountability, urging that public officers adhere strictly to asset declaration requirements.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>
