Why I Will Not Remarry After Buhari’s Demise — Aisha Buhari

According to a publication by Punch Newspaper on December 16, 2025, Former First Lady Aisha Buhari says she has no plans to remarry, describing the decision as pragmatic, not moralistic.

Mrs Buhari made this disclosure during a conversation featured in From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, a newly released 600-page biography of the late former president authored by Dr Charles Omole. The book was presented on Monday at the State House in Abuja.

In the account, Aisha Buhari explained that her choice was shaped by life realities rather than moral judgement, noting that she now has grandchildren and considers one marriage sufficient. The biography portrays her stance as a rejection of societal expectations that often frame widows’ choices in extreme terms, either as disloyalty or sainthood.

The book traces Muhammadu Buhari’s life from his childhood in Daura, Katsina State, through his military and political career, up to his passing in a London hospital in mid-July 2025. Within this narrative, Aisha Buhari’s reflections are presented as part of a personal transition after decades in the public eye.

Looking ahead, the former First Lady said she intends to adopt a calmer lifestyle, balancing family life with philanthropy and travel. She plans to spend more time with her grandchildren, hoping to be remembered as an active presence in their lives rather than a distant public figure.

She will also continue to oversee the Aisha Buhari Foundation and support the cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano, which has reportedly carried out over 200 medical procedures. The biography notes that her future engagements will focus on service, collaboration and hospitality, albeit away from intense political attention.

Dr Omole described her decision as a deliberate step back from public life after years of visibility and scrutiny, framing it as a personal renewal rather than a retreat.

Aisha Buhari married Muhammadu Buhari on December 2, 1989, following his divorce the previous year. Born in 1971 in Adamawa State, she became First Lady when Buhari assumed office in 2015. Their marriage lasted 35 years and produced five children.
