Former National Chairman of the Labour Party and current National Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, has criticised what he described as abuse of power by public office holders and disregard for the rule of law while in government.
Nwanyanwu made the remarks during an interview on SYMFONI TV on Monday, January 5, 2026, while speaking on governance, accountability, and the conduct of former public officials. Speaking during the interview, Nwanyanwu said political leaders often develop a sense of invincibility when in office. He stated, “When we are in power, we think that we are gods.”
He referenced the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, as an example. He said, “Look at Malami of yesterday.” Nwanyanwu described Malami’s current situation in emotional terms. He said, “Crying like a chicken beaten by the rain.”
He repeated his reference to Malami, saying, “Look at Malami.” He then criticised Malami’s professional conduct while in office. According to Nwanyanwu, Malami disregarded the principles expected of his position. He said, “That didn’t believe in rule of law, even as a senior advocate of Nigeria.”
He further accused Malami of disobeying judicial directives. He said, “He didn’t obey court orders.” Nwanyanwu contrasted Malami’s past actions with his present circumstances. He said, “Now look at him, crying like a baby.” He continued by quoting Malami’s alleged reaction, saying, “My right, my right.”
Nwanyanwu questioned the legitimacy of such claims. He asked, “Where is your right?” He went further to suggest punitive accountability. He said, “That one should be put to prison to taste, to drink from the same cup.” Nwanyanwu acknowledged the moral complexity of such an outcome. He said, “Even though it is not right.”
However, he stated that such experiences mirror past actions. He added, “But it is good for people to drink from the same chalice from which they fed people.” He again drew attention to Malami’s case. He said, “Look at him.” Nwanyanwu also referenced allegations of corruption involving public officials. He said, “And look at all the stealing that has been published.”
According to him, such conduct is widespread in governance. He said, “That is all they do in government.” He concluded by describing how dissent is handled by those in power. He said, “Once you raise your voice, put him down.” He repeated the point, adding, “You raise your voice, put him down.
