What Happened In The Past To Abacha I Believe Will Happen To Tinubu — Dele Momodu

Dele Momodu has warned that the political fate that befell Sani Abacha, former military dictator, could also happen to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that current developments in the country, particularly the ADC, reflect troubling similarities with past authoritarian tendencies.

In an interview with Channels Television, Momodu made this statement while reacting to what he views as growing concerns over alleged political interference, particularly accusations that President Tinubu is attempting to weaken opposition forces through judicial means.

He suggested that unless President Tinubu changes from what he described as a repressive style of leadership, history could repeat itself.

Speaking after attending the ADC National Convention, Momodu described the atmosphere of the convention as intense but necessary to preserve democracy. He emphasized his long-standing commitment to activism, recalling his involvement in student protests during his time at Obafemi Awolowo University.

According to him, Nigeria has always faced threats from overly ambitious leaders who attempt to dominate the political space, but such efforts often fail over time.

He pointed out that the APC is still afraid of holding on to power even after getting the support of governors, ministers, and lawmakers. Momodu argued that many people have compared Tinubu to Abacha because of the way he’s intimidating and destabilizing the opposition voices, reflecting widespread anxiety about the country’s democratic direction.

In his words, “They will always try even after Tinubu leaves. Whenever he leaves, some other people will still not learn any didactic lessons from what happened in the past to Abacha and what I believe will happen to Tinubu unless he finds a way to do a reverse of this tyrannical rule.”
