A prominent traditional leader in Benue State, Chief Daniel Abomtse, has voiced serious concerns over the sudden influx of armed herders into his community, following recent U.S. military airstrikes in northern Nigeria.
This revelation was made during an interview with a PUNCH correspondent on Saturday, December 27, 2025, and was published in the Sunday edition of PUNCH on December 28, 2025.
Chief Abomtse, who chairs the Traditional Council in Gwer West Local Government Area, disclosed that he observed unusual movements of heavily armed herders relocating from Sokoto to parts of Benue, particularly Gwer West and Agatu LGAs.
According to him, the herders, believed to be fleeing the aftermath of the U.S. missile operations, have been arriving with advanced weapons and are openly grazing in local communities, raising fears among residents.
He said, “I felt their movement in my local government as well as in Agatu LGA. They have been running away from Sokoto to coastal areas in Gwer West and Agatu with sophisticated arms and grazing openly. They are in my domain.”
