U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump over a proposed multibillion-dollar arms transfer to Israel, accusing him of prioritizing foreign military spending over domestic social needs.
In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Sanders said Trump is “pushing through nearly $7 billion in weaponry to Israel,” arguing that the United States should not continue using taxpayer funds to support what he described as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “genocidal government.”
The Vermont independent senator added that America should focus on providing “health care for all Americans, not weapons for a war criminal.”
Sanders, a long-serving member of the U.S. Senate and a prominent progressive voice in American politics, has been one of the most outspoken critics of U.S. military support for Israel amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
While reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defense in past statements, he has increasingly condemned the scale of civilian casualties and the humanitarian crisis in the enclave, calling for strict conditions on U.S. military aid.
The comments come amid reports that the Trump administration is advancing a major weapons package for Israel, a move that has reignited debate in Washington over America’s role in the conflict and the broader Middle East.
Supporters of the arms transfer argue that Israel is a key U.S. ally facing significant security threats, particularly from Hamas and other militant groups.
