Under Pressure, President Tinubu Questions IGP: ‘No Arrests Yet in Benue?’ — Keshi

Former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Joe Keshi has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s handling of the security crisis in parts of the country, saying decisive leadership was needed following the mass killings in Benue and Plateau States.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Keshi expressed frustration over the federal government’s continued failure to hold security chiefs accountable despite recurring violent attacks that claim hundreds of lives. He recalled that after one of such tragic incidents, President Tinubu visited the affected area and queried the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on why no arrests had been made.

“Was it in Benue or was it in Plateau, how many people were killed? President Tinubu, under pressure, went there and asked the Inspector General of Police why haven’t you arrested anybody? And I said in one television interview that if I was the president, I won’t ask that question, I will sack the Inspector General of Police,” Keshi stated.

The retired diplomat said such repeated lapses in security management and accountability demonstrate a systemic weakness in Nigeria’s approach to law enforcement. He emphasized that the president must send a strong message by holding top security officers responsible for their failures to prevent or respond effectively to attacks.

According to Keshi, the cycle of violence in Nigeria persists because government responses are often reactive and lack consequences for negligence. He urged President Tinubu to prioritize leadership reforms within the police and other security agencies to restore public trust.
