According to a report by The Times of Israel on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Turkish defense companies have signed $6.5 billion in contracts to reinforce and expand Turkey’s “Steel Dome” air defense system, the Turkish Defence Industries Presidency (SSB) announced.
The project, first unveiled in July 2024, is designed as an integrated, multi-layered air defense network, similar to Israel’s Iron Dome system. It includes 47 components, comprising radars, missiles, electro-optical sensors, command and control centers, and air defense elements capable of covering multiple ranges.
SSB Chairman Haluk Gorgun stated that the contracts cover both current combat systems and advanced versions, which will be developed by Turkish manufacturer Roketsan. He added that the “Steel Dome” would rely entirely on domestic technology. “These contracts will enhance Turkey’s deterrence and contribute to increasing the range and capabilities of its combat systems,” Gorgun said.
The initiative comes amid growing regional tensions, particularly following Israeli airstrikes on countries near Turkey, including Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and Qatar. Ankara has responded by boosting its air defense and air power capabilities, seeking to counter potential threats.
Turkey has also emerged as a leading manufacturer and exporter of armed drones, which have been deployed in conflicts across Ukraine, Syria, Nagorno-Karabakh, and various parts of Africa. The “Steel Dome” project complements these efforts, strengthening Turkey’s ability to defend its airspace and respond to regional security challenges.
The SSB emphasized that the program reflects Turkey’s efforts to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and increase domestic defense production. The contracts are expected to advance research, development, and production across multiple defense sectors, reinforcing Turkey’s strategic autonomy.
The “Steel Dome” system is designed to integrate multiple layers of defense, offering protection against aerial threats, including missiles and drones, while enhancing the country’s capacity to monitor and respond to potential attacks in real time.
Officials indicated that the project will take place over several years, with phased development and deployment of the various components. The system’s rollout is expected to significantly bolster Turkey’s national security posture while positioning its defense industry for further exports and technological development.
