According to a report by Daily Post, on October Monday 06 2025, A Federal High Court has dismissed a suit filed by a minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, who sought to prevent the release of his academic records to the public.
The court’s decision has generated widespread reactions, with many Nigerians describing it as a victory for transparency and accountability.
Presiding over the matter, Justice A. O. Faji ruled that public officials could not claim absolute privacy on issues concerning their qualifications. According to the judge, “The moment an individual accepts public office, certain personal detailsespecially those related to competence and integrity become matters of legitimate public interest.”
The minister, whose name is being withheld pending further confirmation, had approached the court after a civil society group requested his university to release details of his academic history. The group argued that the information was crucial to “clarify lingering doubts” surrounding the minister’s qualifications.
In his defense, the minister’s legal team claimed the request was politically motivated and intended to embarrass him. However, the court disagreed, stating that transparency in governance outweighed personal discomfort.
Justice Faji emphasized that democracy thrives when the people can hold leaders accountable,” adding that suppressing such information would “set a dangerous precedent” for future administrations.
Following the judgment, civil rights activists praised the court for “protecting citizens’ right to know. One activist, speaking to reporters, said, This is not about witch-hunting anyoneit’s about ensuring that those who govern us are who they say they are.
