Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has said Nigerians will soon accept President Bola Tinubu’s resignation after the president approved the resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed a replacement.
Omoyele Sowore made this statement while reacting to a statement issued by Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his official X account announcing that he had accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
The president said Egbetokun stepped down after submitting a letter citing pressing family considerations. He commended the outgoing police chief for decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and praised his efforts to strengthen the country’s internal security framework.
Tinubu also approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect. He expressed confidence in Disu’s operational experience and leadership capacity, stating that the appointment would provide steady direction for the force amid prevailing security challenges.
The president added that, in line with the Police Act 2020, he would convene the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector General before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.
Reacting to this, Sowore argued that Tinubu had no option but to accept Egbetokun’s resignation and criticized him for initially appointing Egbetokun.
He maintained that Nigerians would, sooner than expected, accept Tinubu’s own resignation and said history would judge the administration by what he described as avoidable errors and poor judgment at the highest level.
