United States President Donald Trump has delivered sharp criticism of Somalia while defending what he described as tough security measures that helped curb maritime piracy. Speaking in an interview aired on Forbes Breaking News, Trump linked the decline in ship hijackings to decisive military responses and a more aggressive posture toward criminal groups operating at sea.
Trump portrayed Somalia as a failed state with limited central authority, arguing that the absence of effective governance had allowed piracy and violence to flourish for years. He said these conditions once posed serious risks to international shipping, global trade, and economic stability, particularly along key maritime routes.
In the interview, Trump said, “They don’t have a military. All they do is run around shooting people and uh trying to capture ships – Donald Trump.” He used the remark to underline his argument that piracy thrived because of lawlessness and the lack of enforcement capabilities in the region.
According to Trump, shipping companies were previously reluctant to defend themselves due to the dangers involved, including the risk of explosions and massive financial losses tied to damaged vessels. He claimed this reluctance made ships easy targets, encouraging pirates to operate with little fear of consequences.
The president asserted that firm U.S. intervention changed that dynamic, saying pirates were deterred before they could reach open waters. He maintained that these actions restored confidence in international shipping and helped revive trade by making major sea lanes safer for commercial traffic.
Trump also framed maritime security as a global responsibility, arguing that preventing piracy benefits not just the United States but economies worldwide. He said safer shipping routes reduce costs, protect supply chains, and strengthen international commerce.
