Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has raised serious concerns about rising tensions in Nigeria after renewed pressure from the United States over the country’s security and human rights issues.
In an interview on Arise Television, Ahmed spoke about efforts by some groups to push the current US President, Donald Trump, and the US Congress to intervene in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity. He argued that some foreign investigations into alleged violence against Christians are being used to paint Nigeria in a negative light and risk stirring conflict rather than solutions.
Ahmed warned that this outside involvement could fuel internal divisions. He pointed out that many Nigerians seem not to grasp the danger of letting foreign powers influence how Nigeria solves its problems or decide its future. He said some Nigerians abroad are pushing a narrow agenda that could weaken national unity.
He also highlighted that there are Muslims in Nigeria who are outraged and talking about controversial proposals such as removing Sharia law, abolishing blasphemy laws, or moving Fulani people from certain regions. Ahmed believes that these ideas could worsen relationships between communities and must not be encouraged.
Ahmed called for transparency about any agreements between Nigeria and the United States, saying citizens need to understand exactly what they involve.
