
Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has explained why lawmakers from the northern part of Kaduna kept quiet during violent attacks in their region.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Sani reacted to claims that only Christians are being targeted by terrorists in Nigeria. He said both Muslims and Christians have suffered from the same crisis.
The former lawmaker recalled his days in the Senate when killings happened in both Southern and Northern Kaduna. According to him, lawmakers from Southern Kaduna, who are mostly Christians, often stood up to speak out. They raised alarms on the floor of the National Assembly about attacks on their communities, reporting how their people were raped, killed, and their villages destroyed.
However, Sani said Muslim lawmakers from Northern Kaduna chose to remain silent. He explained that they kept quiet because the president at that time was a Northerner. They felt it would be wrong to admit publicly that Muslims were also victims of the violence.
Sani criticized outsiders who claim there is a “mass slaughter of Christians by Muslims” in Nigeria. He said such claims are misleading because the reality is that both Muslims and Christians are victims of banditry and terrorism.
