According to a report by Daily Post on Friday December 5, 2025, Adams Oshiomhole, the senator representing Edo North, has criticized Nigeria’s approach to deradicalizing terrorists, highlighting that previous efforts have failed as some repentant terrorists returned to criminal activities.
Oshiomhole made his remarks during Senate discussions on a proposed amendment to the 2022 Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, which seeks to introduce the death penalty for kidnappers.
The former governor of Edo emphasized that individuals involved in murder and other serious crimes should face the full force of the law, including capital punishment if convicted.
He argued that past deradicalization programs have not been effective, noting that terrorists who were arrested, rehabilitated, and supported financially sometimes resumed their violent actions.
Oshiomhole stressed that the government cannot continue spending significant resources on dangerous criminals only for them to evade severe punishment.
He further stated that discretion in handling such cases has been removed, making the death penalty the legal consequence for anyone convicted of committing grievous offenses.
“Even in the Holy Bible and Quran, those who kill, have no right to live.
“Those discretions are now withdrawn. No more deradicalization. If you are caught committing a heinous crime, the penalty is death if convicted,” he said.
