According to a report by the Punch on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movements has sounded the alarm over Nigeria’s political and security trajectory, warning that long-standing inequities in power distribution could heighten tensions ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking after a two-day conference in Lagos, the coalition stressed that national stability depends on addressing structural imbalances and ensuring fairness in leadership selection.
Drawing attention to historical governance patterns, the group stated, “Since 1960, the North has ruled Nigeria for 46 years, while the South has ruled for only 20 years,” emphasizing that this disparity necessitates equitable arrangements in determining the next president. The coalition warned that any disregard for power rotation could intensify regional discontent and threaten national unity.
Beyond political representation, the alliance highlighted growing security concerns, pointing to an escalation in terrorism and insurgent activities across the country. It alleged that extremist groups are becoming increasingly sophisticated and may enjoy backing from entrenched political interests, further complicating efforts to restore peace.
The coalition urged the administration of Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to undertake urgent reforms, including restructuring the security framework, decentralizing military training, and establishing state police to improve responsiveness and prevent further destabilization.
Additionally, the group condemned any moves to undermine democratic governance, stressing that strict adherence to constitutional processes and transparent leadership selection are vital to preserving national cohesion. It also called for swift legal action against any individuals or groups attempting to sabotage democracy, warning that delays could embolden extremists and provoke wider unrest.
This communiqué underscores the coalition’s position that both historical power imbalances and emerging security threats must be addressed decisively to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and ensure a peaceful transition in 2027….See More
