Former presidential candidate and 2027 election hopeful, Peter Obi, on Monday led a peaceful protest to the National Assembly to demand electoral reforms, especially the electronic transmission of election results.
In a video shared by AIT News, Obi arrived at the National Assembly complex with supporters and civil society activists who gathered to press lawmakers to amend the Electoral Act. The protesters called for real-time electronic transmission of results from polling units, saying it would make elections more transparent and credible.
While speaking to journalists, Obi explained that transmitting results electronically is a simple process and should not cause confusion. He said when elections are conducted properly and results are transmitted clearly, everyone will be more willing to accept the outcome, no matter who wins.
According to Obi, unnecessary changes and delays in the electoral process only create doubt and tension among citizens. He stressed that allowing elections to follow the normal and trusted process would help strengthen democracy in Nigeria.
Obi also reacted to the Senate’s announcement of an emergency plenary session scheduled for the next day. He said the protest was meant to ensure that lawmakers understand the importance of making the right decision on the Electoral Amendment Bill. He added that the group would wait for the outcome of the Senate’s meeting before deciding on any further protest.
In his words, “Simple transmission, it’s not a difficult thing. Allow the elections to go through the normal process, whoever wins we will accept.
