According to a report by the Punch on Thursday, January 8, 2026, police in Lagos have apprehended a woman suspected of orchestrating a large-scale online scam focused on premium electronics. The suspect, Modupeola Bamisade, aged 35, is alleged to have defrauded customers by advertising iPhones and other Apple products at heavily discounted rates through social media promotions.
Authorities report that her scheme relied on collaborations with influencers who advertised the fake sales, lending them an air of credibility. Customers who placed orders and made payments reportedly never received the gadgets, with the suspect providing endless excuses to avoid delivery.
A police source familiar with the investigation revealed the extensive scale and duration of the alleged fraud. The source noted, “She has been doing this for some time now and was able to dupe over 100 innocent individuals to the tune of over N500m.”
The arrest followed a report filed by one of the influencers involved, who became suspicious after numerous buyers complained about not receiving their orders. After Bamisade was taken into custody, several victims came forward to identify her and share their experiences.
One reported victim stated she paid one million naira for a phone and was given a series of false updates, including a call from someone pretending to be a delivery rider, but the product never arrived. This case underscores the persistent threat of online vendor fraud, where unrealistic discounts are used as bait.
Security operatives continue to warn the public to exercise extreme caution and verify the legitimacy of online sellers before transferring money, as such deceptive schemes remain prevalent.
