The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, has again raised concerns over the political climate in the state, warning that recent developments could trigger another round of crisis. Amaewhule made this assertion while reacting to actions taken by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which he said may further strain relations between the executive and the legislature.
Speaking in a video aired on Channels Television, the Speaker accused the governor of pursuing steps that are capable of escalating tension within the state’s political space rather than easing it. He expressed worry that the situation, if not properly managed, could plunge Rivers State into renewed instability.
According to Amaewhule, “What Fubara is trying to do is to set the stage for another crisis in Rivers State. Instead of calming nerves and promoting dialogue, these actions are capable of deepening divisions between the executive and the House of Assembly.” He stressed that governance thrives on cooperation and mutual respect among arms of government.
The Speaker therefore called on all political actors too exercise restraint and place the interest of peace and stability above personal or political considerations. He warned that a repeat of past political turmoil would negatively affect governance and the welfare of Rivers State residents.
