In a recent interview on Channels TV, former presidential aide Laolu Akande has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to take decisive steps to end the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State. Akande said the ongoing tension between Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara has continued to unsettle governance and create uncertainty in the state.
Akande argued that the crisis has been worsened by political ambiguity and conflicting loyalties, which have blurred party identity and weakened democratic order. He noted that the absence of clarity has fueled tension within the state government and the House of Assembly, making it difficult for institutions to function independently and effectively.
Addressing Wike directly, Akande said, “Let’s speak to him, Wike; you can still redeem the situation, make it easy, and join APC.” He explained that openly aligning with one political platform would reduce confusion and help stabilise the political environment in Rivers State, rather than sustaining what he described as a confusing overlap of interests.
The former presidential aide also warned that continued political confrontation risks slowing development and undermining public confidence in leadership. He stressed that personal influence should not override institutional responsibility, adding that Rivers State cannot afford prolonged instability driven by unresolved power struggles.
Akande urged all parties involved to prioritise dialogue and reconciliation, noting that peace and stability are essential for governance and economic progress. He concluded that decisive leadership and political honesty are needed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy in Rivers State.
