Rivers Assembly Drops Four Commissioner Nominees Submitted by Governor Fubara, Clears Five After Screening

The Rivers State House of Assembly has dropped four out of the nine commissioner nominees submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara for screening and confirmation, in a development that has attracted political attention in the state.

The lawmakers, however, cleared five of the nominees, who have now emerged as commissioners-designate, after undergoing what the Assembly described as a rigorous screening process that lasted for over two hours.

According to reports from the Assembly proceedings, the screening exercise involved questioning the nominees about their professional experience, policy ideas, and plans for contributing to governance in Rivers State.

While the House did not immediately provide detailed reasons for dropping the four nominees, the decision means that only five individuals from the list submitted by the governor have been approved to join the state executive council, pending their official swearing-in.

Among those reportedly dropped during the process was a professor, though further details about the individuals affected were not immediately disclosed at the time of the announcement.

In Nigeria’s political system, state governors are required to submit nominees for commissioner positions to the State House of Assembly, which has the constitutional authority to screen and either approve or reject them before they can officially assume office.

Commissioners serve as members of the State Executive Council and typically head various ministries responsible for areas such as finance, education, health, agriculture, works, and other government sectors.

The screening process carried out by the Rivers State House of Assembly is considered a key step in ensuring that nominees meet the qualifications and expectations required for public office.
