According to a report by the Times of Israel on Tuesday 23 December, 2025, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a sharply worded warning on Tuesday to push back against what he stated were lingering ambitions by regional powers to extend their influence across the eastern Mediterranean, a remark widely interpreted as being aimed at Turkey.
Speaking during a trilateral summit in Jerusalem with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, Netanyahu reflected on the shared histories of the three countries, noting that each had once lived under the rule of foreign empires. Those periods, he said, were not erased easily, but independence was ultimately secured through struggle and sacrifice.
And that history, he implied, still matters today.
Netanyahu told reporters that any belief that old imperial reach could be revived in the modern era was misplaced. “To those who fantasize they can reestablish their empires and their dominion over our lands, I say: Forget it. It’s not going to happen. Don’t even think about it,” he said.
Beyond the rhetoric, Netanyahu stressed that Israel, Greece and Cyprus are not standing alone. He pointed to growing cooperation between the three states, arguing that closer coordination strengthens their collective ability to defend themselves in an increasingly tense region.
The meeting marked the tenth trilateral summit between the countries and came amid reports that the trio is weighing the creation of a joint rapid-response force in the eastern Mediterranean. The discussions are taking place against the backdrop of rising concern in Athens over Turkey’s expanding military footprint and assertive posture in nearby waters.
